Do electors have to vote for their party's candidate?

Neither the Constitution nor any federal law forces electors to vote for their party's candidate. However, some states require electors to vote for their party's candidate if the candidate wins a majority of votes from among citizens of that State. It is exceptionally rare - but not inconceivable - that an elector may vote contrary to the wishes of their party.
