What are patents and copyrights?

When a person has composed or invented something new and useful, Congress may give them an exclusive right to produce and sell their composition or invention for a certain number of years; during which time no one else may produce or sell that item, or profit from that idea without due compensation to the person who composed or invented it. Patents are for inventions and copyrights are for ideas.
