Do members of congress receive anything for doing the business of the public?

Their best reward is the honor of serving their country; but as many of them cannot afford to leave their own business so often without having the loss in some measure compensated, the Constitution says that they shall be allowed such a compensation to be ascertained by law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States.
